Mother's Day became an official holiday in 1914, but Father's Day didn't come about until much later.
On July 5, 1908, a church in West Virgnia held a sermon honoring the 362 men who died in an explosion at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah. A Spokane Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by this speech and launched a campaign to initiate the Father's Day holiday.
In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge urged State Governments to recognize and celebrate Father's Day. Washington State was the first to do so, and soon after, many others followed suit.
In 1966 Lyndon B. Johnson made the 1st Presidential Proclamation to honor Fathers on the 3rd Sunday in June.
In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a Proclamation making Father's Day an official National Holiday.

Some people objected to the holiday because of its sentiment and domestication of manliness with gifts and attention. Others saw it as a gimmick to commercialize and sell more products.
