Let's Chat About...Football

With the Super Bowl coming up this weekend, I thought it would only be appropriate to discuss the history of the NFL! This year's big game is Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Fransico 49ers!

The American Professional Football Association (APFA) was established on August 20,1920. These teams were charged a $100 fee and it consisted of 14 original teams. The name was changed to the NFL (National Football League) in 1922.

The first NFL playoff game was held on December 18, 1932. This contest was between the Portsmouth Spartans (6-1-4) and the Chicago Bears (6-1-6) The Bears defeated the Spartans 9-0.

In 1933, the Washington Redskins owner, George Marshall, proposed a policy of total racial segregation and the NFL adopted it. Black athletes were denied the ability to play until 1946 when the Las Angeles Rams signed Kenny Washington and Woody Strode.

The first televised NFL game was held on October 22, 1939. It was aired on NBC and the contest was between the Philidelphia Eagles and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

In 1960 the American Football League was formed. This was a rival to the NFL and they had a total of 8 teams (New York Titans, Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Houston Oilers, Las Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders and the Dallas Texans). In 1970, the AFL was absorbed into the NFL and joined it's 3 existing teams (Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers to form the American Football Conference.

The very 1st Super Bowl was held on January 15, 1957, between the Green Bay Packers (NFL) and the Kansas City Chiefs (AFL). The game was played at the Las Angeles Memorial Coliseum with the winner being the Packers over the Chiefs 35-10.

Although the Minnesota Vikings have never won a Super Bowl, they are still my team! I was born and raised in Minnesota and proud of it!! We only made it to the big game 4 times and came up short on all occasions, I still keep the faith! I have never actually attended a Minnesota Vikings game, but it's not for lack of trying. Randy and I drove down to Minneapolis in a snowstorm in 2010, only to wake up in our hotel Sunday morning and discover that the Metrodome's roof had collapsed. This past summer, we took our Grandson Jabbar to a preseason game at the US Bank Stadium. Wow was that impressive! Here is a little Minnesota Vikings history for you:

  • The Minnesota Vikings were formed in 1960 and based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

  • The Vikings were named after the Medieval Scandinavia reflecting Minnesota's strong Scandinavian culture.

  • Their 1st official game was on August 5, 1961, at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They played the Dallas Cowboys and won by a score of 37-13.

  • They have had 3 different stadiums over the years. The Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, MN (1961-1981), the Hubert Humphry Metrodome (1981-2013), and the US Bank Stadium (2016-present).

  • The "Purple People Eaters" era was during the time of 1967-1977. This represented a strong defense by the Minnesota Vikings. (Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall, Gary Larsen and Doug Sutherland)

  • The 5 greatest players from the Minnesota Vikings were: Fran Tarkenton, Randy Moss, Randall McDaniel, Adrian Peterson and Alan Page.

  • Fun Fact: The Minnesota Vikings are the only team in the league with a prefix of the State instead of a City.

So, who are you rooting for at this year's Super Bowl? It doesn't really matter to me since neither of the team I wanted to see in it (Ravens & Lions) made it. I just hope it's a good game and may the best team win!!
